Irrigation Preparation Underway
The weather cooperated with producers this last week which allowed them to be in the fields preparing for irrigation season and trying to keep weeds under control. According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistic Service, Nebraska Field Office, temperatures were normal for this time of the year with highs in the 90s. All parts of the state received precipitation ranging from .36 inches in the Northwest to 1.12 inches in the South Central part of Nebraska.
Crop conditions remain above last year’s. No corn rated very poor, and 1 percent rated poor, 14 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 24 percent excellent.
The following pictures are taken by FFA Chapters across the state representing each of the eight districts. They show the crop progress in each area and illustrate the differences in progress throughout the state of Nebraska.
The pictures below were taken in a field near Sutton, Nebraska. During the past two weeks, the area has received between an inch and a half to two inches of rain, and temperatures have reached the lower 90s which make excellent growing conditions.

The following pictures were taken in a field near Loup City, Nebraska, located in Sherman County. The corn in the area has reached four feet tall with the help of 1.67 inches of rain and moderate temperatures. The picture on the right was taken directly above the corn plant and shows the whorl with the leaves present and shooting upwards. Most corn plants will develop 20-21 leaves and they will reach maturity between 90 and 120 days after emergence.

This picture was taken in a field near Firth, Nebraska. The area had an average high of 85 degrees, and they received 0.5 inches of rain.

This photo comes from the Heartland FFA Chapter in Henderson. This field has received no rain during the past two weeks. Ridging is complete and they will begin irrigating soon.
