CORN CHECKOFF UPDATE February 2011

NCB Sponsors, Attends DC Leadership Program  Growers and leaders from the Nebraska Corn Growers Association recently attended a Washington, DC Leadership Program that is sponsored by the Nebraska Corn Board (NCB).  Bob Dickey, NCB farmer director from Laurel, Neb. attended the program that is focused on starting new leaders in the association.  Prior to meetings in Washington, DC, the attendees heard from the Nebraska Corn Board and Renewable Fuels Association.  Washington, DC meetings included the National Corn Growers Association, National Agriculture Statistics Service, Congressional offices, National Pork Producers Council, Corn Refiners Association, Syngenta, North American Millers Association and American Farmland Trust.  

 Green Flag Signifies Beginning of American Ethanol, E15, NASCAR Partnership American Ethanol made its debut in the NASCAR racing circuit in Daytona, Florida during the weekend of February 20.  American Ethanol is a partnership of the National Corn Growers Association and their state affiliates, Growth Energy and NASCAR; to communicate that America is capable of producing and using its own renewable fuel.   The Daytona 500 was the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race to be fueled using a 15 percent ethanol blend (E15).    

CommonGround Program Launches in Nebraska  The Nebraska Corn Board and the Nebraska Soybean Board teamed up with the Northern Lights HyVee in Lincoln, Neb. to launch CommonGround.  CommonGround is a unique program in which Nebraska farm women are joining to talk to other women about food production, food safety, farm life and their “common ground”.  Nebraska CommonGround spokeswomen include Shana Beattie, farmer from Sumner; Dawn Caldwell, farmer from Edger; and Kristen Eggerling, rancher from Martell.

 NCB Raises Awareness of On-Farm Engulfments  With the number of grain bin engulfments on the rise over the last four years, the Nebraska Corn Board, along with the National Corn Growers Association and National Grain and Feed Foundation are raising awareness of being safe in and around grain bins.  The Nebraska Corn Board’s recent CornsTalk newsletter discusses the issue of grain bin safety and the National Corn Growers Association and National Grain and Feed Foundation have developed a video showing the hazards of flowing grain.

With a NASCAR fan base of 75 million, the Nebraska Corn Board, through the American Ethanol partnership will have the opportunity to spread the positive aspects of ethanol and American farm families.
